Our Story

Established in 2019, HANDEP is a social enterprise and craft-based brand that works with indigenous communities to create a sustainable village economy.

The name HANDEP is borrowed from the Dayak Ngaju dialect, which as a whole means the spirit of working together and helping each other as a family or community.

Rapid globalization and the development of the extractive industry in Central Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) has led to a high rate of deforestation in a rainforest that is currently touted as a ‘lung of the world’. But more than that, it has also led to the eviction of indigenous people from their ancestral lands, a decline in sustainable forest-based products, and the loss of traditional practices that has resulted in structural poverty for indigenous Dayak communities. As a response to the issues faced within his community, Randi Julian Miranda; a proud Dayak, born and raised in Kalimantan, chose to take action.

HANDEP was born with the intention to help reconnect indigenous Dayak people to their rich lands and forests, encouraging them to nurture their local resources while adding value to what they have, and economically grow together as a community by creating sustainable village economies that align with ancestral wisdom. By exploring traditional craft that highlight materials sourced from local forests and individual forest gardens, HANDEP marries sustainable economic development and cultural preservation to not only support village communities and preserve the rainforests, but also foster a real human connection between the makers and customers.

We aim to to create trickle-down impact through economic empowerment that is tailored to suit the communities that we work with, in order to support the preservation of indigenous knowledge and practices while also halting future deforestation and biodiversity losses.
