SUSTAINABLE AND ETHICAL TRADITIONAL CRAFT

  • Our eco-fashion products are made of 80% rattan, which is a natural and sustainable natural fiber, with 20% additional materials such as fabric, leather, and faux leather for the finishing touches.

    You can learn more about our materials, our process, and why we’re confident in our sustainable and ethical practices by reading more on our blog.

  • Yes, our rattan is handwoven using centuries-old traditional Dayak weaving methods by our incredible artisans in our partner villages. This allows us to offer sustainable and ethical crafts that are distinctive and unique.

    The finishing touches on pieces where material is combined, are also handmade by other partner artisans who are experts in their fields.

    You can learn more about how your favorite HANDEP pieces are made on our blog.

  • We work within the framework and guidelines of the fair-trade principle;

    (1) We take 20-30% profit from every product, and we make sure that our hardworking artisans are rewarded fairly;

    (2) We share a significant proportion of our profit to our partner weavers and farmers in the forms of capacity building and village infrastructure development.

    You can read more about our partnership with our artisans on the People section of our About Us.

  • We are doing our very best to make sure that we are not just greenwashing. While we do not currently have external certification to validate our work, we self-regulate our operations to ensure compliance with sustainability principles:

    (1) The use of eco-friendly materials; 80% of the material we use is rattan; a biodegradable material that is sustainably grown in the tropical rainforests. We also use natural dyes for any coloring you see on our products;

    (2) Supply chain transparency and traceability; the weavers and farmers source all the rattan sustainably from forests or gardens. We know exactly where they are sourced from and we know who makes what;
    (3) Eco-friendly production process; our processes are mostly handmade, using traditional tools that require no fossil fuel at all;

    (4) We are free of child labour;

    As we aim to be radically transparent in our operations, check out our annual Impact Report posted in the About Us section, and our article on our ongoing One Purchase, One Tree project.
