HANDEP 2023; What’s new?

It’s been a big year for HANDEP, and collaboration is the name of the game. Creating positive change through sustainable and ethical practice isn’t easy - especially when you’re working alone. Lucky for us, we’ve been able to connect, curate, and collaborate with people, brands, and other interested parties in our network to explore creative ways to offer better options to our customers.

We also took the time to figure out where we should be - sometimes quite literally. Our yearly impact report reminded us to reflect on how the previous year went and if we were going in the right direction, while some unexpected opportunities came up that allowed us to make the right move.

With all that in mind - here’s a few things you might have missed in the past year!

Impact Report 2022

Pictured left; Our Impact Report features a more thorough breakdown of HANDEP activities and impact.

Our Impact Report 2022 was released in July, a radically transparent document detailing our ventures in cultural preservation, how we’ve avoided green washing through our ethical and sustainable practices, and more.

You can read all our previously published Impact Report on the Impact section of the website, or head right to our 2022 report for the latest updates.

Award-winning design

We participated in a competition held by the Directorate General of National Export Development (DJPEN), Ministry of Trade. Our Bermuda, Marinang, and Bunter bags took home the Good Design Award 2023, alongside several other local brands that highlighted innovation at the core of its design.

The award was the qualifying step towards an exhibition hosted by the World Design Organization in Japan, where more than 1,500 products from all around the world was displayed. The Good Design Exhibition held at Tokyo Midtown, connected designers, innovators, and practitioners from the creative industry all around the world, and was an important event for HANDEP to introduce Dayak craftsmanship to the world.

Creative Collaborations

We love exploring new ideas. Whether it’s about capacity building; working with other organizations to give out workshops and share the knowledge we gained along the way, or in creating collaborative pieces that push us to get more creative in exploring all the ways rattan can be used, as is or mixed in with other materials.

Sacred Hands Collection

We collaborated with Alena Murang, the world’s first female sape’ (a lute instrument from the highland tribes of Borneo) player to create The Sacred Hands collection.

Crossing borders from Indonesia to Malaysia, the collection celebrates the shared history of the Dayak people, combining woven rattan from Dayak Tewoyan from Central Kalimantan and Tenun (fabric created by weaving threads using traditional looms) by Dayak Iban from West Kalimantan and Sarawak, the collection presents artisanal knowledge and know-how at its finest.

You can browse the Sacred Hands collection online or visit our stores to fully appreciate the beauty of each piece in the collection.

Lingwu x HANDEP

While our collaboration with Lingwu is in its second year of partnership, the Oscar bag and Miller bag is newly available for purchase in Indonesia through the HANDEP flagship store in Ubud.

Lingwu has been a dream partner that we are proud to work with. With upcycling and empowering sustainable practices at the forefront of their approach towards creation, Lingwu is a brand that is committed to crafting leather goods that celebrates the preservation of artisanal skills and traditional craftsmanship.

Visit our flagship store to pick up your favorite Lingwu x HANDEP piece today.

HANDEP x Yagi; Body care line

We collaborated with YAGI Natural Indonesia, who focuses on producing natural personal skincare products utilizing ingredients derived from cacao industry waste, which are sustainably sourced.

Highlighting Kalimantan Illipe Butter which is rich and dense in oleic acid and stearic acid. With a similar composition to Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter, its high melting point allows it to be used in thicker products.

Touted as a Dayak beauty secret, we’re excited to bring more attention to Illipe butter that is made from the seeds of the Shorea stenoptera tree (locally known as Pohon Tengakawang), a native to rainforests of Kalimatan.

You can purchase the Nyai Body Butter and Nyai Body Serum thourgh our online store, or visit us in Ubud and Palangka Raya.

Ndare Collection

We connected with alvinT, a Jakarta-based furniture brand started by Alvin Tjitrowirjo who works with local artisans to explore and develop natural materials popularly used in local furniture production like rattan, bamboo, marble, stone, and teak.

The result is Ndare, a furniture collection that merges the best of Dayak design and modern sensibilities. Working together with artisans from Gunung Purei, each piece highlights Dayak craftsmanship, framing traditional patterns with contemporary design.

For further inquiry or purchase of these intricate collectible pieces, you can drop an email on this link.

Keep an eye out on the website as we’ll be talking more about the Ndare collection soon!

It’s been a good year for good work. We hope you’ll stick around to see what else we have up our sleeves, and if you think we can work together to create more good - do let us know! Drop us a line on hello@handep.co to let us know if we can collaborate.
