HANDEP closed 2023 with a bang through our furniture collaboration launch with Jakarta-based furniture brand alvinT, headed by award-winning designer Alvin Tjitrowirjo. The Ndare collection that takes the Dayak Ngaju work for ‘to weave’, celebrates the versatility of traditional Dayak weaving in its application in modern works.

Connection is a big part of the philosophy behind Ndare. Like HANDEP, Alvin has a deep appreciation of Indonesia’s culture and traditions, working with local artisans to explore and develop natural materials popularly used in local furniture production like rattan, bamboo, marble, stone, and teak.
Our shared values in believing that locally sourced materials and Indonesian artisans are deserving of more appreciation and acknowledgement led to a collaborative creation with artisans from Gunung Purei to highlight the incredible craftsmanship mastered by each weaver.
Framing traditional patterns with contemporary design, Ndare showcases the sacred connection of the past and the future that exists in harmony.
Collaboration has always been our favorite way to dive deeper into the art of weaving. The exploration of materials, techniques, and design encouraged our artisans to push the boundaries of their skills and explore possibilities. Bringing new joy into an age-old craft they grew up with.

The collection serves to further delve into the visible and invisible threads of relationships that shape us every step of the way, complex interwoven stories that start from Dayak rattan farmers and artisans, to the design studios of AlvinT, to the eventual homes of the collection.
This physical exploration of connection brings the past and the future together in collectible pieces that defy time.
