High in the mountains of Northern Bali, the Bali Aga area comprises several villages linked by a rich tradition and history. Proudly indigenous to Bali, the people of Bali Aga can claim that they were Bali’s first settlers, with language and culture unique to the area without much interference from other settlers. Their communities offer a unique look into a different kind of modern Balinese life.

While tourism in the Southern areas of Bali has become the number one income generator, the people of Bali Aga have a thriving industry that revolves around the luscious nature around them. Agricultural produce like mangosteen, coffee, and palm sugar are popular commodities produced by the region. However, one of their biggest exports, and most highly valued skills, is the creation of woven bamboo products.

We were introduced to the community of Bambu Baliaga through a program initiated by Canada Responsive Innovation Fund (RIF).
